What is LifeDex?
LifeDex is a mobile application designed to help you discover and identify the natural world around you. Using AI-powered image recognition, LifeDex enables you to identify plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms by taking a photo. The app also provides local discovery features and map-based exploration to help you find wildlife and nature in your area.
Information We Collect
We collect information to provide and improve our services. The types of information we collect depend on how you use LifeDex.
Account Information
When you create a LifeDex account, we collect information such as your email address, username, and password. You may also choose to provide additional profile information such as a display name or profile picture.
Photos and Camera Uploads
When you use LifeDex to identify organisms, you may upload photos through your device's camera or photo library. These images are processed to provide identification results. Photos you submit may be stored as part of your personal discovery history, Dex entries, or map-based exploration experience, depending on how you use LifeDex. We do not use your submitted photos to train AI models or for general product improvement unless we clearly ask for and receive your permission.
Location Data
With your permission, LifeDex collects location data to power local discovery and map features. This helps us show you wildlife and nature observations relevant to your geographic area, and to record where your discoveries were made. You can disable location access at any time through your device settings.
AI Identification and Third-Party Processing
LifeDex uses artificial intelligence to identify organisms from your photos. To provide this service, images you submit may be processed by third-party AI services. These services analyze your photos to generate identification results and do not retain your images beyond the processing period required to return results, unless otherwise stated by those services.
We select AI partners who maintain appropriate data protection standards, but we encourage you to review their privacy practices as well.
Subscriptions and Purchases
LifeDex offers premium features through in-app subscriptions. Subscription and purchase transactions are processed through the App Store or Google Play, and managed via RevenueCat, a third-party subscription management platform. RevenueCat collects transaction information necessary to process your purchases and manage your subscription status.
We do not directly collect or store your payment card information. For more information about how RevenueCat handles your data, please refer to their privacy policy.
Data Storage and Backend Services
LifeDex uses Supabase as our backend infrastructure provider for data storage, authentication, and related services. Your account information, discovery history, and other app data are stored on Supabase servers. Supabase maintains industry-standard security practices to protect your information.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide, maintain, and improve LifeDex services
- Process and deliver AI-powered organism identifications
- Enable local discovery and map features based on your location
- Maintain your personal discovery history and collections
- Process subscriptions and manage your account
- Communicate with you about your account or the service
- If enabled, analyze app usage to improve user experience
Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. We may share your information in the following circumstances:
- Service Providers: With third-party services that help us operate LifeDex, including AI processing providers, Supabase for backend services, and RevenueCat for subscription management
- Legal Requirements: When required by law, legal process, or government request
- Safety and Rights: To protect the safety, rights, or property of LifeDex, our users, or others
- With Your Consent: When you have given us permission to share your information
Data Retention
We retain your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you services. If you delete your account, we will delete or anonymize your personal information within a reasonable timeframe, except where we are required to retain certain information for legal or legitimate business purposes.
Children's Privacy
LifeDex is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at the email address below, and we will take steps to delete such information.
Your Choices
You have several choices regarding your information:
- Account Information: You can update or correct your account information through the app settings
- Location Data: You can enable or disable location access through your device settings
- Photo Access: You can manage camera and photo library permissions through your device settings
- Account Deletion: You can request deletion of your account by contacting us
- Communications: You can opt out of promotional communications by following the unsubscribe instructions in those messages
